Junior Development
Towards performance and development in golf
The use of Sport Psychology is probably better recognised as a tool used to enhance the performance of elite athletes. In sports where the difference between winners and losers can be measured in a fraction of a second or by a single shot, the psychological elements of performance are often regarded as the difference between success and failure. However, the use of sport psychology principles may have its greatest effect in the development of young sports people. In this respect, many of the core skills that are so essential to elite performance can be attained, refined, and improved in the early years of golfing development. As a result, when our young performers mature they will have at their disposal strong mental techniques and a belief system that will enable them to reach the higher echelons of the game.
Over the past two decades British golf has enjoyed enormous success and currently a new and exiting crop of home grown talent is challenging for all of the major honours. However, British golfing success in the future is not a guarantee and constant work needs to be conducted to ensure that sufficient numbers of juniors become interested in the game of golf. Furthermore, to maintain interest and to become successful requires long-term commitment, a strong and dedicated support system, and also a coaching structure that has a direction, a purpose, and provides a learning environment that is sensitive to the needs of the young performer.
Golf Psychology Services offers those involved in junior golf the opportunity to learn more about the young performer and the environment in which they develop. The workshops explore the latest research and philosophies related to sport development and provide delegates with the knowledge and strategies that may facilitate junior golf development in their home clubs or counties.
| Parent Workshops Research has indicated that parental support is critical for long term success and participation in sport. Parents provide not only financial support but also emotional support as early involvement in competition can be confusing for the young performer. Therefore, it is critical that the parents understand the problems that face young golfers and develop support strategies that can enhance enjoyment, performance, and participation in golf. Overview

Coach Workshops (suitable for club and county officials)
Research examining the development of sporting excellence has indicated that the role of the coach is crucial for sporting success. Coaches are at the forefront of junior development and provide both technical and emotional support for young golfers who compete and strive for success. Golf coaches are also responsible for writing and implementing many of today’s junior coaching programmes and therefore they must possess an in-depth understanding of their role and influence in the development of junior golfers. Conducting this important work without such information can have a detrimental effect on both golfing performance and participation levels within junior golf.
Golf Psychology services provides workshops and individual support for those coaches who have an interest in developing junior golf.
